Wet dogs, muddy paws and a clean home.
Practical tips for UK dog owners on drying, fur care and keeping mud out of the house and car.
How to dry a wet dog quickly
After a rainy walk, a swim or a bath, most dogs shake once and then head straight for the sofa. The quickest way to dry a wet dog is to take off the worst of the water at the door, then let something absorbent do the rest while they settle.
A dog drying robe or dog drying coat made from microfibre soaks up water from the coat without you rubbing for ages with a towel. Pop it on, fasten the belly band, and your dog dries off while they warm up and calm down.
Dog fur, double coats and that wet dog smell
Breeds with thick or double coats, like Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Spaniels and German Shepherds, hold a lot of water close to the skin. If the undercoat stays damp it can take hours to dry, and that's where the familiar wet dog smell comes from.
Drying the coat properly after every walk helps keep dog fur fresher, cuts down on damp patches around the house, and keeps loose dog hair where it belongs: on the towel, not the carpet.
Muddy paws and keeping floors clean
Muddy paws are the biggest cause of a dirty hallway. A soft dog drying mitt or paw towel lets you wipe each paw, between the toes and up the legs before your dog walks inside.
Keep a mitt and a robe by the back door so the routine takes a minute: paws first, robe on, then in. It's a simple habit that saves a lot of mopping on wet winter dog walks.
Muddy dogs in the car
Wet, sandy and muddy dogs can ruin a car boot fast. A waterproof car boot protector for dogs, sometimes called a boot liner, covers the floor, sides and bumper so mud and hair stay on the cover.
Lay it in once, give it a wipe or a rinse after messy days, and fold it away when you need the boot back. Pair it with a drying robe on the drive home and your dog arrives dry, not dripping.
Keeping your dog warm after a cold walk
In the UK autumn and winter, a soaked coat can leave your dog chilly, especially older dogs, puppies and short-haired breeds. Getting them dry quickly helps them warm up and get comfortable sooner.
A dog towel robe works as a cosy layer straight after a walk, a swim at the beach or a bath at home, so it's useful all year round, not just on muddy days.
Choosing the right size dog drying coat
Measure your dog's back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and compare it with the size guide. Our robes come in five sizes, from small dog breeds like Chihuahuas and Jack Russells up to large breeds like Labradors and Retrievers.
If your dog sits between two sizes, choose the bigger one. A slightly roomier robe covers more of the coat and is easier to put on a wriggly, wet dog.
